About Us

The Basant group, funded by a grant from the Wellcome Trust, seeks to understand how tyrosine phosphatases regulate cell signalling. This large family of enzymes has been highly understudied compared to its kinase counterpart. We investigate these phosphatases in the context of signalling to the actin cytoskeleton and in virus-infected cells.

About the role

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate position in Dr. Angika Basant’s group at the Randall Centre for Cell and Molecular Biophysics, King’s College London.

 

The researcher appointed will focus on candidate phosphatases that have been validated to regulate actin dynamics during infection with the poxvirus Vaccinia. How do these phosphatases function, what are their key interactors, how do they recognise substrates, how do they impact signalling dynamics and outputs? The broader goal is to contextualise these findings in uninfected cells and, with the help of a collaborator, in other viral infections. The researcher appointed will take advantage of, and further develop, a Vaccinia virus-based signalling platform, as well as cutting-edge molecule counting and optogenetics tools available in the lab. Experience in phosphatase biology, microscopy, cell signalling or biochemistry is desirable but not mandatory.

A PhD in a relevant discipline is required (or applicant to be near completion). A high-quality publication record and effective science communication skills are essential. International applicants are welcome.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

	PhD qualified in relevant subject area*
	Strong track record in a key subject area such as cell signalling, cytoskeleton or similar
	Excellent experimental skills and strong ability to lead project design and management
	An enthusiasm for the research questions being addressed in the lab
	Strong communication skills both in writing and for oral presentation
	Collegiality and ability to work well in a research team
	Ability to work independently, take initiative, learn new skills and troubleshoot technical problems
	Scientific rigor and integrity, and good practice in health and safety procedures 


*  Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

 

Desirable criteria


	Experience in supervision and teaching of other researchers
	Knowledge of phosphatase biology and/or phosphotyrosine signalling
	Experience in biochemistry and/or proteomics
	Experience in microscopy

The Role

Our School Administrators are at the heart of supporting colleagues to deliver our objectives in education, research and engagement. With 150+ academic staff in four Discipline areas (Law, Economics, Politics and Sociology), School of Social Sciences (SoSS) in the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences (FABSS), is a busy and diverse community located on the main University campus, and spread over two buildings. The School has been formed in August this year, and is in the early days of reaslising its potential to grow as a new unit. We have a vibrant student community, with undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes across all four Disciplines. Each discipline organises a large number of research and student events throughout the year.

This role requires occasional evening, early morning and weekend working.

The Department has existing strength in the studies of Chinese history, Hong Kong history, Japanese history, Pacific history, Southeast Asian history, British history, digital history, as well as various subfields including media, gender, animal, and environmental studies. General Requirements

The appointee is expected to an internationally prominent scholar in his/her field of specialization.

More specifically, he/she should possess (i) an excellent track record of scholarly publications in internationally leading peer-reviewed journals and with major scholarly presses, (ii) a successful grant records, (iii) broad experience in teaching and course development, and (iv) substantive administrative and institution-building experience.

Lingnan University

The Faculty of Science invites applications for a
GRANT FUNDED POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN CONSERVATION SCIENCE starting from November 2024 or as agreed. The Postdoctoral Researcher will receive a 2-year scholarship funded by the Kone foundation. This position is grant funded only; it does not establish an employment relationship with the University of Helsinki.

Position description

The successful applicant should contribute to one or more of the research themes of the project “The interplay between funding and governance factors in achieving sustainable conservation outcomes for protected areas in the tropics” financed by the Kone foundation. The principal investigator (PI) of the project is Associate Professor Johanna Eklund. The project aims to provide insight into what are the enabling factors needed to attain sustainable conservation outcomes for protected areas in the long term. The project will use expert elicitation techniques to engage with local stakeholders and experts and identify what they perceive as important in implementing successful conservation policies. The work will include identifying both remote factors (such as institutional constraints) and proximate factors (actions directly related to protected areas). The project uses novel attribution methods, previously not used in conservation science, to explore causalities. The analytical framework will build on a Qualitative Comparative Analysis – allowing to study how certain factors in their specific combinations with other factors influence an outcome and will require defining and framing the candidate conditions, their thresholds, and the truth tables of the method in collaboration with local protected area stakeholders and experts.

Responsibilities as a grant funded postdoctoral researcher

The appointed researcher will lead one of the planned working packages of the project and this will entail to design the data collection, conduct stakeholder focus groups and workshops, to analyze data using a Qualitative Comparative Analyses framework, and publish the findings in high level journals in the field. The position will require familiarity analyzing both qualitative and spatial quantitative data (GIS, focus groups, interviews, workshops), but the work will be supported by a part time research assistant.

Requirements and eligibility criteria

The postdoctoral researcher must have a doctoral degree in conservation science, geography, policy analysis, or a related field. It is expected that applicants have experience with mixed-methods and working with both qualitative and quantitative data and analysis. Previous experience with impact evaluation methods in conservation, and especially qualitative attribution methods is a merit. As the position will require leading one of the project work packages, excellent organizational, social, and collaborative skills are also required. Familiarity with different types of stakeholder engagement activities is considered a merit. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are also expected, and so is a track record of being able to publish scientific articles.
