Doctoral Researchers for Finnish Doctoral Program Network in Artificial Intelligence (FCAI) 

The University of Helsinki is currently seeking to fill 64 three-year positions for doctoral researchers. These positions are part of a national initiative in doctoral education and are available within various doctoral education pilots. The appointments are set to commence on January 1, 2025. 

As a doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki, you will conduct your doctoral research as part of an international scientific community under the guidance of top researchers in your field.  

Finnish Doctoral Program Network in Artificial Intelligence is launched in 2024 to build a world-class PhD program with quality supervision, mobility, and multi-disciplinarity as integral parts. The program is a joint effort of 10 Finnish universities and will educate 100 new PhDs in artificial intelligence research. Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture has granted 25.5 million EUR to support the program.  

We are looking for prospective PhD students to work in the following research areas:  


	Fundamental AI  
	AI in Communications and Signal Processing  
	AI in Health  
	AI in Engineering  
	AI in Language and Speech Technology  
	AI in Society and Business  


Successful candidates should have previous experience in machine learning, statistics, artificial intelligence, or in another relevant field, demonstrated by success in related studies and ideally also by some publication record. Other merits demonstrating suitability for a researcher position can also be considered. Candidates should hold (or expect to shortly receive) a Master’s degree in computer science, statistics, electrical engineering, mathematics, or in another relevant field.  

The positions require the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. The primary working language in the joint program activities is English, so good written and oral command of English is required.

Qualifications and Responsibilities 

We are looking for motivated candidates who have demonstrated their capabilities in previous studies and are committed to completing their doctoral degree within the targeted three-year timeframe. Your responsibilities will include conducting research for your dissertation and completing the doctoral degree according to the curriculum of the doctoral program. Additionally, you may be involved in teaching and other duties, accounting for up to 5% of your annual working time.

The selection process will consider: 


	Suitability of the research plan to the chosen pilot project 
	Quality and feasibility of the research plan within the three-year timeframe 
	Planned connections to the professional world and the significance of the position for the applicant's career after completing the doctoral degree 
	Feasibility of completing the dissertation within three years, as demonstrated in the supervision plan 


Additionally, we expect from all applicants:  


	Commitment to three years of intensive and full-time work  
	Strong motivation and previous evidence of the ability to achieve results and complete the project on schedule  
	Creativity along with the ability for analytical and conceptual thinking, a determined and independent work approach, collegiality, the ability to engage in constructive collaboration with others, and inspire others  
	Fluent oral proficiency in English and the ability to write scientific texts in English 
	The appointed doctoral researchers are expected to reside in Finland, though temporary research visits abroad are possible. If relocating, employment can only begin after arriving in Finland.

Doctoral Researchers for Doctoral Education Pilot in Precision Cancer Medicine (iCANDOC) 

The University of Helsinki is currently seeking to fill 64 three-year positions for doctoral researchers. These positions are part of a national initiative in doctoral education and are available within various doctoral education pilots. The appointments are set to commence on January 1, 2025. 

As a doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki, you will conduct your doctoral research as part of an international scientific community under the guidance of top researchers in your field.  

44 of the positions are available in the iCANDOC precision cancer medicine pilot. In iCANDOC you will be part of a thriving research community based on the iCAN flagship aiming for discoveries and improved treatments in the area of digital precision cancer medicine.  You will be able to leverage a globally unique ongoing pan-cancer study including thousands of patients and multitude of cutting-edge approaches and technologies in translational and clinical medicine as well as data sciences including AI/machine-learning approaches. The iCANDOC program aims to train professionals with various backgrounds to answer the increasing need of professionals in this area and including clinicians. In addition to outstanding supervisors including global leaders in this field, iCANDOC will benefit from an aligned postdoctoral program providing supervision support. With the help of iCANDOC partners including Helsinki University Hospital HUS as well as representatives of relevant private sector areas the program includes training and secondments enabling networking and linkages with potential future employees.    

Candidates with a medical training may be considered for these positions with flexible working arrangement, in order to enable clinical work requiring employment at the hospital and beneficial for the thesis project. This will include but is not limited to community management, analysis, and reporting, overseeing our School social media channels, actioning content requests and content creation that includes video, photography, and design. Dr. Yue Xie is a Research Assistant Professor in Department of Mathematics and Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (HKU-IDS) at the University of Hong Kong. He was a postdoc at UW Madison working in the nonconvex optimization group led by Professor Stephen J. Wright. He received his PhD degree in Pennsylvania State University and Bachelor degree from Tsinghua University. Dr. Yue Xie has been focusing on algorithm design and analysis to address optimization problems complicated by nonconvexity and stochasticity with all types of applications. He has published/served as the referee of top-tier journals including Mathematical Programming, SIAM Journal on Optimization, and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, etc. He has delivered numerous presentations at major international conferences such as International Conference on Continuous Optimization (ICCOPT), International Symposium on Mathematical Programming (ISMP), SIAM Conference on Optimization and International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML).
