Opened in 1966, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County is based on a 500-acre site close to the city of Baltimore and only 30 minutes’ drive from Washington, DC.  It defines itself as an “honors university” committed both to cutting-edge research and to providing a excellent and demanding education for highly motived students.

Undergraduate courses are largely on the liberal arts model, though many graduates stay on to study science, engineering and IT. Particular areas of research strength include life sciences; environmental sciences; big data, cybersecurity and high-performance computing; and public policy. UMBC is growing strongly in all these areas and classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a university with high research activity.

Though it is a public university, one of 12 institutions within the Maryland university system, UMBC has always stressed innovation and interdisciplinarity. It has never been afraid to pioneer new models of teaching and research, and new ways of contributing to the regional economy. It was responsible, for example, for creating the state’s first university research park, generally known as bwtech@UMBC, to promote local entrepreneurship This can be found on a separate but adjacent 71-acre site and has proved highly effective in nurturing start-ups, offering support for existing businesses and providing networking opportunities.

Soon after it was set up in 1966, UMBC adopted a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the state dog, as its mascot. This sometimes appeared in costumed form as Fever the Retriever, though there have also been live mascots kept on campus. One was used as the model for a statue known as True Grit, whose nose is sometimes rubbed for good luck by freshers. The main dining hall is also known as True Grits.

Our faculty collaborates closely with industry on translational research and innovation with focus on addressing pertinent industry challenges to impact businesses.  The Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Scheme is co-funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and SIT to encourage and support outstanding young Singaporeans interested in pursuing an academic career at SIT. The Applied Research Fellowship aims to provide doctoral candidates who are about to complete or have recently completed their studies an opportunity to engage in advanced training and/or research at an overseas university for one year.  Besides financial support, awardees will also receive academic mentorship. Upon completion of the Fellowship, awardees will be considered for Assistant Professorship. Eligibility and Selection Criteria Singapore citizen  Doctoral candidates who have recently completed or are about to complete their studies in a discipline under the supported areas for START below  Excellent academic record plus a high degree of proficiency and motivation for selected research area  Have been accepted or have applied for a postdoctoral training at a leading overseas university in a research area that is aligned with SIT’s supported areas  A keen interest in an academic career Value of Fellowship The Fellowship provides  Monthly stipend  Overseas maintenance allowance  Return economy airfare  Conference and fieldwork grants  Overseas medical insurance  Fellows will also each be assigned a SIT faculty mentor throughout their post-doctoral training and have opportunities to participate in faculty development programmes.  The fellowship is tenable for one year. On an exception basis, a two-year programme may be supported. Service Commitment One year for every year of sponsorship. POSITION OVERVIEW Department: Advanced Semiconductor Research Centre Position: Research Fellow Location: Suzhou, China Contract Type: Fixed-term, one term for 2 years ABOUT XJTLU In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University – a top ten university in China. Offering a unique international education experience, XJTLU brings together excellent research practice and expertise from both institutions and gives students the skills and knowledge they need to secure careers in a global marketplace. XJTLU now has over 25,000 enrolled students in both Suzhou and Liverpool in the UK,including more than 5,000 master’s and doctoral candidates. XJTLU maintains a full-time faculty of 1,400 professional teachers, with approximately 40% being international academic staff. All researchers hold doctoral degrees, and 90% possessed overseas work or educational experience before joining XJTLU. ABOUT XJTLU Advanced Semiconductor Research Center  The XJTLU Advanced Semiconductor Research Center is jointly established by Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) and the National Third-Generation Semiconductor Technology Innovation Centre (Suzhou). It focuses on advancing third-generation semiconductor power electronics and serves as a university-level research platform that spans campuses and schools. The research center is dedicated to wide-bandgap semiconductor power electronics and integrated technologies, aiming to look ahead, develop distinctive capabilities, and serve both industry and society. Driven by industry needs, the research center collaborates with the China Advanced Semiconductor Industry Innovation Alliance (Beijing, CASA) to promote talent cultivation through the integration of advanced semiconductor production and education. Leveraging the strengths of XJTLU’s Sino-foreign cooperative education model, the center fosters collaboration among industries, universities, and research institutions at both domestic and international levels. RESPONSIBILITIES Conduct research: Design and execute experiments, collect and analyze data, and interpret results to advance the understanding of related research areas. Research experience at a university or equivalent after completion of PhD degree; Strong publications record in electron device such as EDL and above; Experience in presenting at top conferences such as ISPSD in the electrical and electronic engineering field. Experience in industry collaboration projects. Hands-on experience in cleanroom environments, including chip fabrication, testing, and familiarity with semiconductor equipment. Experience in securing research grants. Fluency in English. Professional memberships such as BCS, IET, ACM, IEEE, and HEA. Applicants should be established experts with an internationally recognized record of scholarship in Marine Conservation. They should possess a Ph.D. in Marine Science, Conservation Biology, Environmental Policy, or a closely related field, and demonstrate a strong research focus in one or more of the following areas: marine protected areas, marine spatial planning, policy and management, fisheries, and/or ecosystem-based conservation. A proven track record of securing competitive research funding and publishing high-impact research of regional and global relevance is essential. Particular expertise and research experience in Southeast Asia, with a focus on China, are required. The appointee will be a key member of the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) at the University, providing academic leadership by developing a world-class research programme, mentoring junior staff and students, and contributing to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He/She will also serve as a key academic representative of the Hong Kong and China Marine Protection Alliances – cross-sector coalitions focused on marine conservation and sustainable use of marine resources at both local and national levels. Both initiatives are funded by the Swire Trust to coordinate and amplify marine protection efforts.
