About the Job

We have a vacancy for a Researcher in Multiscale Characterization of Materials Exposed in Hydrogen Environments, at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The position is funded by Horizon Europe and is a collaborative project with several academic and industrial partners. Information about the project can be found at its website (https://hywayproject.eu/). 

The position is a temporary position limited for 2 years. 

The accepted candidate will conduct research using a multiscale characterization approach to gain fundamental insights into hydrogen's interactions with metallic materials. Their contribution will serve as the basis to understand deformation of metallic alloys in hydrogen environments and for simulations for the partners associated with this Horizon Europe project. 

Duties of the position


	Work independently to collect, analyse, and report thorough data pertaining to materials structure and properties using a wide variety of experimental techniques, such as electron microscopy and atom probe tomography.
	Understand the deformation and mechanical performance of metallic materials in different environments by correlating microstructural observations with compositional alterations.
	Communicate results with project partners, participate at conferences and present at relevant conferences. 
	Jointly supervise master students. 


Required selection criteria


	You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD. If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation of the obtained doctoral degree must be presented before you can take up the position.
	You must have a professionally relevant background in metallurgy and/or materials science with a focus on metallic materials. 
	You must have hands-on experience in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) while practical experience in conducting and analyzing EBSD data will be considered a plus. 
	You must have hands-on experience in Atom Probe Tomography (APT) and APT sample preparation by Focused Ion Beam. 
	You must have a basic understanding of the failure and deformation of metallic materials. 
	Hands-on experience with SEM, EBSD, FIB and APT, while experience with other characterization methods such as TEM will be considered a plus. 
	Fluent written and spoken English


Preferred selection criteria


	Experience in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and TEM sample preparation will be considered a plus.
	Experience in hydrogen charging of metallic materials will be considered a plus.
	experience in steels will be considered a plus.
	Hands-on experience with SEM, EBSD, FIB and APT, while experience with other characterization methods such as TEM will be considered a plus. 
	Previous experience with hydrogen in metallic materials and/or hydrogen charging will be considered a plus.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Researcher (code 1109) is normally remunerated depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 2 years and starting date is planned as soon as possible and no later than end of April 2025.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

The position is subject to external funding. 

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

Your future position is at the Department of Political Science in the research area of Environmental Politics. The Department of Political Science researches and teaches in all core areas of political science, develops innovative and problem-oriented research foci, and offers a wide range of options for specialization for students. The department's staff investigates the changing forms and functions of governance, the state, and democracy in different political fields, geographic regions, and political spaces.

In the research area of Environmental Politics, a team of renowned and award-winning academic staff at one of the most advanced departments for political science in the German-speaking world awaits you. The position is to be filled from 1 December 2024 and is limited to 6 years. In the event of further funding, the position can be extended or made permanent by mutual agreement.

Your future tasks:

The primary area of responsibility is the establishment and management of the Environmental Politics Research Group (EPRG), a long-term research infrastructure led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alice Vadrot. The tasks include research support (covering the entire research life cycle from design, data collection, analysis, data curation and management, interpretation, and writing), funding acquisition, public outreach and organizational activities.

Expected:


	Active participation in research and administration of the research group’s future and ongoing projects such as TwinPolitics, Marco-Bolo and IPBES Austria
	Project applications and acquisition of third-party funding at national and EU level
	Design and organisation of events (lecture series) and international conferences
	Establishment and expansion of an independent research profile reflecting the main objectives of the EPRG
	International publications and lectures
	Independent teaching of courses to the extent of the collective agreement provisions (four, max. six semester hours per week)
	Participation in the development and design of objectives and milestones of the group and participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance of those. Participation in research group administration (related to research, teaching and public outreach).
	Contributing to the networking of the Environmental Politics Research Group with relevant national and international research institutions in the field of environment, biodiversity and the oceans, as well as exchange with the public sector and broader society.
	Developing and maintaining project related databases, as well as data management and curation.


This is part of your personality:


	PhD in political sciences and/or international relations or environmental studies, or a related field of study with a political science profile or an international relations profile or an environmental studies profile
	Post-doctoral research experience
	Excellent knowledge in the fields of international politics with a focus on environmental politics and one of the following areas: ocean protection and governance, biodiversity policies and politics, nature conservation and sustainable use.
	Interest in research related to:  global environmental agreement-making, multilateral negotiations, science-policy interfaces, data politics.
	Excellent knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative methods of empirical social science research.
	Proven ability to publish in renowned international peer-reviewed journals
	High level of written and oral expression.
	Excellent command of written and spoken English, willingness to learn German. Proven capacity for teamwork

Description

The Robotics and Intelligent Systems Control Laboratory (RISC) at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applicants to apply for the open Research Engineer position to develop specialized Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

RISC invites qualified applicants in the areas of electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering to apply.

The successful applicant will primarily develop specialized UAVs and Uncrewed Ground Vehicles (UGVs) and integrate within the on-board computer sensors and actuators. This position will enhance the operational capabilities of the developed UAVs and UGVs so that they can fly and move at air and/or ground. Safety features including redundant autopilots, RGB-D cameras, parachute, GPS-RTK, HD-video transmission, and large distance communications will be provided to the successful applicant for this platform.

Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or closely related fields. Experience with embedded systems, mechatronics, or robotics are required. Work with autonomous robots and competency in Robot Operating Systems, Ardupilot, Solidworks, or Gazebo Physics Engine Simulator are preferred.

About RISC:

The Robotics & Intelligent Systems Control Laboratory (RISC Lab) at New York University Abu Dhabi focuses on perception, control, and planning in primarily autonomous robots. Our vision is to realize fully capable aerial workers, delivery systems, and collaborative autonomous agents as well as focus on medical applications.

Active research areas include distributed mapping and localization for autonomous agents, cooperative area coverage and mapping, design and implementation of surgical robotic solutions, collaborative flight of physically connected aerial vehicles, cooperative aerial manipulation, and autonomous ground & aerial package transportation and delivery. RISC Lab operates in two research spaces, the office space located in A1-005, and the Kinesis workspace B2.C3.029.E in collaboration with the Core Technology Platform of NYUAD. The Kinesis workspace includes a large experimentation arena, equipped with a state-of-the-art, 24-camera motion capture system, for large-scale indoor experiments.

Applications are invited for appointment as Research Officer (RO)/Assistant Research Officer (ARO) in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Clinical Medicine (Ref.: 530461), to commence as soon as possible, on a one-year temporary basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance.

The appointee will participate in a large-scale multidisciplinary research and community youth mental health project. It is Hong Kong’s first territory-wide initiative to build a youth-specific and youth-friendly mental health platform that provides timely preventive intervention to youth with distress and risk for mental health deterioration. The project will transform current youth services and provide a framework for future developments in youth mental health and youth-focused services both locally and internationally.

Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in psychology, social sciences, public health, sociology, statistics or a related discipline and at least 5 years of relevant work experience. A strong background in psychology or community research are preferred.  Applicants should have excellent communication skills, experience in knowledge sharing, and the ability to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary team. Those with less experience may be considered for appointment as ARO.  He/She will work closely with the unit leader to develop and implement a strategic plan; collaborate with local and international youth mental health experts to evaluate project components and model; prepare reports; analyse data; train and supervise junior research staff; and perform other duties as assigned.
