Wayne State University (WSU) strives for “industry, intelligence, integrity” according to its motto. Founded in 1868 as Detroit Medical College, now the university’s School of Medicine, it has expanded over the years to become an urban research institution made up of 13 schools and colleges.

With over 100 buildings located in the beating heart of Detroit, WSU offers nearly 350 degree and certificate programs to approximately 28,000 students.

Students of the university call themselves the Wayne State Warriors. They flock from nearly every state in the US and roughly 60 countries worldwide. For this reason, WSU claims to be the most diverse student body out of all 15 of Michigan’s public universities.

Its urban campus is located on 238 acres in what is known as Detroit’s Cultural Centre Historic District, filled with galleries, museums and theatres. The area is also well known for its lively history of rock ‘n’ roll culture, which saw the genesis of bands like the White Stripes and the Stooges, while the first rock journal Creem was also born there.

With over four million volumes, the American Library Association has ranked the WSU library as the 75th largest collection in the United States. Its Walter P. Reuther library of labour and urban affairs is also the largest of its kind in the US.

Wayne State is renowned for its academic and research excellence — particularly its strength in the health sciences — and holds the Carnegie Foundation’s highest designations for research activity and community engagement. Along with Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, Wayne State is part of the University Research Corridor, a consortium of Michigan’s top research universities that conducts 95 percent of all the academically funded life, medical and health sciences research and development in the state.

Notable alumni include the late Philip Levine, Pulitzer prize-winner and poet laureate for the US, 2011-12, whose poems often focussed on working-class Detroit.

With SFA licensing and ISO certifications, we empower businesses through R&D, pilot production, and commercial manufacturing on a pay-per-use model. Key Responsibilities: 1. Project Coordination and Client Engagement Lead or participate in project discussions with customers, ensuring proper assessment of Food Safety and Occupational Safety and Health risks. Establish and maintain all necessary project documentation and compliance records. Conduct briefings and training sessions on equipment, processes, and site requirements for customers and visitors. 2. Operational Supervision and Execution Supervise or execute operations in designated rooms, ensuring compliance with established requirements. Provide technical support and troubleshoot issues during operations. Conduct pre-run preparation and post-run cleaning to maintain operational efficiency and hygiene. 3. Quality and Compliance Maintain accurate records for identification and traceability of projects and operations. Ensure cleanliness of equipment and facilities, performing verification activities according to scheduled timelines. Develop mastery of machine capabilities and operational knowledge to optimize performance. 4. Process Improvement and Resource Management Engage in exploratory work, problem-solving, and process improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency. Procure and maintain sufficient resources such as packaging materials, cleaning chemicals, consumables, and stationery to support day-to-day operations. 5. Training and Workshop Support Plan and execute training courses, workshops, and seminars to support food companies and foster industry innovation. Job Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology, Chemical Process, or a related discipline. 2-5 years of experience in Research and Development or Manufacturing processes, particularly with UHT/HTST, spray drying, extrusion, retort processing, freeze drying, and similar technologies. Postdoctoral Researcher in the Computational Analysis of Culture

We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a fixed term contract between 9/26 – 5/29 or as agreed for the OTSO project. This position is based in the Human Sciences – Computing Interaction Research Group at the Department of Digital Humanities and relates to a long-standing interdisciplinary collaboration that studies the Finnic oral poetry system based on a large set of transcribed poems. The post-doctoral researcher will work in tight collaboration with people from computer science, linguistics and folkloristics to develop and apply capabilities for the large-scale modelling and analysis of the Finnic oral poetry system, based on a large set of transcribed poems. Depending on the background of the selected candidate, this may include, for example, the development of LLM and other machine-learning methods for the identification and extraction of higher-level signals (e.g. motifs, story schemas, naming formulas) from this multilingual corpus, the statistical modelling and large-scale analysis of said phenomena, or the development of mixed-method research pipelines. Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. For this position, the appointee must hold a doctoral degree in computer science, data science, digital humanities, statistics, or a related field, and have a keen interest in tackling complex problems in interdisciplinary collaboration. Previous experiences of such, as well as of working with large volumes of data (also in high-performance and GPU-accelerated computing environments) are considered advantages. Strong teamwork skills and an excellent command of written and spoken English are also required. A knowledge of Finnic languages is considered an advantage for the corpus work, but not a necessity. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to international academic activities, including high-quality peer-reviewed publications. The position is filled with a six-month trial period. What we offer The salary for the position will be based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual gross salary is €42,000 - €49,000. In Finnish universities, the teaching and research staff (app. 65% of total staff) have a special system regarding the free time equivalent to holiday. They belong to the 1,612 annual working hour system, in which the annual amount of paid holiday is app. 5-6 weeks on average per year. The post holder will participate in the experimental research activities of staff and students and will communicate effectively with different lab users. The job involves the preparation of test samples using conventional and rapid prototyping techniques, undertaking testing using advanced testing protocols, as well as installing arrangements specific for different testing configurations. The postholder will be required to support experimental projects at all academic levels, as circumstances dictate and as requested by their line manager. They will be responsible for maintaining the testing equipment in excellent working conditions and for the professional upkeep of the laboratory spaces. They will work closely with other technical staff to ensure the safe and efficient running of laboratories, and to showcase the experimental activities of Mechanical Engineering Sciences in relation to student applicants and external sponsors/clients. About you The post holder will maintain the MSSU Laboratory and set up and run laboratory tests. They will have good communication and IT skills. A qualification in Materials Engineering, or similar discipline, is desirable. Some relevant work experience in the above fields related to optical or electron would be an advantage. The project supports Singapore’s commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction. As a country with limited natural resources, Singapore is investing in innovative carbon dioxide (CO2) utilization technologies to reduce emissions and enhance energy security. This research aims to develop an integrated process for converting CO2 into valuable chemicals using renewable energy. The approach combines biotechnological and electrocatalytic processes to efficiently transform CO2 into useful chemicals, providing a novel and sustainable pathway for chemical manufacturing. The project is led by Dr. Zhou Kang at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), with research strengths in metabolic engineering, microbial biomanufacturing, and sustainable process development. One Research Fellow will be hired to support the microbial engineering and bioprocess development aspects of the project: The Research Fellow will work under Dr. Zhou Kang at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). This role focuses on producing platform aromatics from C2 building blocks using engineered microbial strains, pathway engineering, and fermentation strategies. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing the project towards a lab-scale demonstration of an integrated CO2-to-chemicals process. Key Responsibilities Conduct independent laboratory research related to microbial fermentation, strain engineering, and biotransformation. Develop and optimize microbial strains, biosynthetic pathways, and cultivation strategies to improve efficiency and product yield. Design and support the integration of biotechnological processes into a continuous lab-scale system. Characterize and analyze chemical and biological products using advanced analytical techniques. Collaborate closely with project team members and external collaborators across metabolic engineering, biocatalysis, and related disciplines. Document research findings, prepare technical reports, contribute to scientific publications, and help supervise junior researchers or students when needed. Qualifications & Experience PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Synthetic Biology, or a related field. Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following areas: microbial fermentation, metabolic engineering, biotransformations, or bioprocess development. Hands-on experience with genetic engineering, molecular biology techniques, and strain construction is highly desirable. Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to collaborative projects. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. A strong publication record or clear evidence of research productivity will be an advantage. Our lab uses Python, MATLAB and C++ to automate both data analysis and process control. Knowledge in these tools as well as emerging agentic AI will also be an advantage.  Professional Development The initial contract will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based on performance and project needs. The Research Fellow will have opportunities to lead publications, present at conferences, and build an independent research profile within the project. The role offers strong exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration in sustainable chemical manufacturing and carbon utilization research.
