First Impressions

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a narrative by a man who took his name from Scott's hero in The Lady of the Lake:

"I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot county, Maryland."
