First Impressions

This week's First Impressions, the competition in which you have to identify a book from its opening line, comes from a dandy who took part in the Napoleonic campaigns: "On 15 May 1796 General Bonaparte entered Milan at the head of that youthful army which a few days earlier had crossed the bridge at Lodi, and taught the world that, after so many centuries, Caesar and Alexander had a successor."
