This reader became established as a core text at many universities in the late 1990s and the second edition has been expanded to include elements on race and post-colonialism. Tosh has downgraded the first edition's section on postmodernism and has added writings explaining the "cultural turn" in historical research. Comparing the changes between first and second editions is itself an exercise worthy of an undergraduate class.
Who is it for? First-year undergraduates taking the common "What is History?" course.
Presentation: A series of short extracts from noted historians organised into sections dealing with major aspects of the discipline.
Would you recommend it? Yes: this book has been on most departmental reading lists since the first edition appeared in 1999.
