The academic community's sympathetic response to the unmasking of "high-class hooker" "Belle de Jour" should come as no surprise ("Prostitution did not finance Belle de Jour's PhD", 19 November). Her plight, and the way she overcame it, is an apt metaphor for much of higher education today.
