It may be desirable, and even possible, to attract more women into engineering, although repeated attempts over the past 50 years have failed (review of Gender Inclusive Engineering Education, Books, 23 September). The unavoidable corollary, however, is that more men would have to be drawn into professions such as nursing, psychology and (increasingly) medicine that are currently dominated by women. There is no sign that they wish to be.
