Whatever the merits of increased private-sector involvement in our universities, Carl Lygo of BPP University College is wrong when he tells THE readers that "those bodies that inspect BPP are subject to the Freedom of Information Act and so the (Quality Assurance Agency) reports in relation to BPP are available". Prior to BPP's belated decision, taken under pressure, to publish the report on its own website, the University and College Union wrote to the QAA asking for a copy and received the reply that "the QAA is not covered by the Freedom of Information Act" and therefore it would not disclose the report.
BPP is not publicly accountable in any comparable way to traditional UK universities.
