In a recent news article, Malcolm Gillies, vice-chancellor of London Metropolitan University, talks about affordability with regard to fees ("Private challenge a major influence on London Met fees", 9 June). But regardless of fee levels, repayments are nil if graduates earn under £21,000 and 9 per cent on salaries above that level.
The "affordable" fees Gillies has chosen will make no difference to students financially on graduation: but London Met will not be able to afford its previous breadth of provision and further investment in quality.
