Old division dies hard

十二月 12, 2003

Call me naive for not seeing it before, but your diagonally juxtaposed articles on the debates on fees ("Grants may be key to success", THES , December 5) and research-teaching ("May doubts research link") gave me a sudden vision of the future.

There will be research-teaching universities charging high fees and teaching-only universities charging low fees. Perhaps the Quality Assurance Agency could be called upon to see that each is giving value for money ("QAA 'must guard integrity' if rules relaxed").

It is the binary divide all over again, but this time financed by graduate debt.
