Still offering shelter

二月 18, 2010

Your report that the National University of Ireland (NUI) has been dissolved by the Irish Government is premature ("Umbrella body put down", 28 January). Batt O'Keeffe, the Minister for Education and Science, has announced the Government's decision to dissolve the NUI, but implementation will require legislation, currently being prepared.

In the meantime, the NUI continues to spread its 102-year-old umbrella over its constituent universities and recognised colleges. It provides a central forum for member institutions; a connective framework for the protection and promotion of NUI degrees; central services, registers and archives; public recognition of academic excellence through its awards; and significant support for academic publishing. It continues to fulfil its charter's promise to "encourage original research, promote scholarship and spread learning throughout the land".
