At Barts and the London Medical School, we have been able to put into practice a learning experience suggested by one of our students ("Students to be 'change agents'", November 30). Emma Lightbody, a third-year medical student who has a particular interest in the emerging field of pre- hospital care, has spent much of her spare time in the past 14 months working with the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service and a London Ambulance Service paramedic.
The experience she gained led her to reason that other students could also be involved, so she approached the trust staff and the medical school. From that initiative, we have come up with a series of linking elective modules for students from second to fifth year. The pilot for the programme is under way, and we are looking forward to it enhancing the educational experience for students.
The prospect of students helping us develop their programmes is very exciting, and we look forward to hearing from more of them.
