Should our members vote for a new union covering post-16 education, the AUT and Natfhe want it to have the best possible equality structures, reflecting the finest traditions of both organisations. Both unions are committed to combating discrimination and feelings of disempowerment, even where they are perceived to happen in our organisations. We welcome the formation of a network and recognise the importance of it remaining outside the unions' formal structures. But we are also considering our own initiatives, including a committee and an annual conference for black members.
A key test of any new union will be its ability to create an environment where black members feel valued. We are keen to continue dialogue with black members to ensure that.
