The UN Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) is a collaboration of ten United Nations organizations and global higher education networks for sustainability. HESI aims to enhance the role of the higher education sector in advancing sustainable development by facilitating multi-stakeholder discussions, actions, and the dissemination of best practices.

Higher Education plays a unique and vital role in responding to the sustainable development challenges we face globally. Specifically higher education:

  1. equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to address urgent societal challenges.
  2. helps meet the growing demand for talent and expertise in industries and other organisations tackling these issues.
  3. drives research and innovation to develop new solutions for a more sustainable future.

Higher education systems are adapting to meet these needs. There is an emerging international trend to include criteria within accreditation and quality assurance requirements related to sustainable development. This event will put a spotlight on that trend plus more. If you cannot attend personally, please designate someone from your organization that can attend and report back about the meeting so your organization can design its next steps.
