Michael Thorne, pro vice chancellor at the University of Sunderland, has been appointed vice chancellor of the university with effect from January 1998.

University of Greenwich

John Humphreys, professor and head of the school of post compulsory education and training, has been appointed pro vice chancellor.

University of Warwick

Tony Monnington, former assistant director of indoor facilities, has been appointed to the post of director of physical education and sport; Dawn Duddridge, former assistant registrar in personnel, assistant registrar (quality assessment) academic office;Esther Meininger, former secretary to the European programmes office, international officer; Jennifer Nutkins, former assistant registrar (examinations office) senior assistant registrar in the academic office.

European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories

Robin Vaughan of the remote sensing group, University of Durham, has been elected chairman of the association.
