Appointments to the ESRC board: James Sharples, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers and chief constable of Merseyside Police, he is also county director of St John Ambulance Association and president of the Merseyside Police Orphans Fund; David Rhind, director general and chief executive for the Ordnance Survey, official adviser to the Government on survey, mapping and geographical information, vice president of the International Cartographic Association and chairman of the Royal Society's Ordnance Survey Scientific Committee, former professor of geography and head of resource centre, Birkbeck College; Elizabeth Mills, director of Research into Ageing, member of the board of trustees of Age Concern England, member of the Health of Older People R&D Group and the National Executive for the Association of Medical Research Charities (1992-96);

Dorothy Bishop, senior research scientist in the applied psychology unit at the Medical Research Centre in Cambridge, member of the British Neuropsychological Society and the Experimental Psychology Society; Robert Burgess, founding director of the Centre for Educational Development, Appraisal and Research, pro-vice chancellor, University of Warwick former honorary general secretary and president of the Association for Teachers of the Social Sciences.
