The Academy of Medical Sciences is discussing the Science of Violence on October 19. The meeting will bring together biomedical scientists, policymakers, lawyers, law enforcers and the public to look at ways in which medical science can help us to understand how to deal with violence better. The meeting takes place at the Royal Society in London.

* David King, the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser, will speak at the Rapid Climate Change: International Science Conference, organised by the Natural Environment Research Council. The conference will look at the scientific understanding of climate change and the role of the Atlantic Ocean's thermohaline circulation in that. October 24-, Holiday Inn, Birmingham.

* Sex and the City, a conference on interpersonal relations in Britain, 1500-1800, will explore issues ranging from homosexuality and bisexuality to infertility and religious attitudes to sex in early modern Britain. The event is organised by Jennie Jordan, who has researched widely on Tudorattitudes to porn. Nottingham Trent University,October 25.

* Regionalism and Identity in British Art: History, Environment and Contemporary Practice will bring together a range of artists and cultural historians to consider the relationship between artistic depictions of regions of Britain and their reflections of and impact on history, memory, myth and regional identity. Sir Howard Newby will give the keynote address. The event is organised by the University of the West of England and is hosted by the Royal West of England Academy. Bristol, October 28.
