(drawn up by students)

1. Get a copy of yourstudent's working hours/ shifts and check regularly to see if they have changed

2. Where possible, try tohelp students find part-time work related to their discipline. Use former students as contacts for placements

3. Give out assignments in manageable chunks, with reasonable notice

4. Make sure you know about any hardship funds available and help students apply for them

5. Have a reliable answering machine

6. Be willing to stretch your timetable to help a student

7. Treat your relationship with your students as a bank manager would a struggling account holder. Although they may be seriously overdrawn one week, they will work hard to pay it all back the next.

8. If you feel you cannot help, refer your student to someone who can.
