Our People Vision
Here at Derby, our People Vision is based on the simple belief that if we can attract the right people, motivate and provide development in a supportive, friendly but performance focused environment, then they, and the University, will enjoy continuing success. We believe that this is the ‘ultimate people business’, great emphasis is placed upon engaging with our colleagues and improving our leadership to un-tap the discretionary effort from each employee, that will give us the competitive edge in our delivery to our students and customers.
We'll achieve this by putting our values at the heart of everything we do and by being a 'values-led' organisation. This means that we place as much value on how we do things as on what we do: applying our core values of Quality; Valuing People; Student Focus; Opportunity and Openness; and Challenge and Innovation. Continuing to do this has given Derby a clear and positive signature and a definite edge in the new HE market place.
Moreover, we're committed to providing all our staff excellent career and personal development opportunities, together with a total rewards philosophy that's based on providing competitive, affordable, flexible packages that recognise performance.
Living and Working in Our County
Our central location allows many staff to commute from across the country. But the majority have chosen to settle in this most diverse and vibrant of counties - and with good reason. The sheer variety that Derbyshire has to offer means that however you wish to live, there's a home to suit you. Here, towns and villages sit comfortably alongside breathtaking countryside, with more than 700 acres of open spaces in the city itself.
The City of Derby
While its current population amounts to over 200,000 people, Derby is a small and friendly city - one which has retained its sense of community while developing a rich multi-cultural identity. Derby is regarded as one of the best cities in the UK in which to live, with residents benefiting from the Intu shopping centre, a raft of bars and restaurants and fantastic sports facilities. All this, with the glorious Peak District right on our doorstep.
The city is home to international companies, many of whom - including Rolls-Royce, Bombardier and Toyota - have close links with the University. Situated in the south of the county, Derby is easy to get around and close to the M1. It also affords easy access to East Midlands and Birmingham International Airports. Many major cities are only one to two hours away by road or rail - including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.
