Americans dominate non-university sector

十月 14, 2005

The data on the world's most productive institutions for medical research outside the university sector for 2005 differ significantly from last year's data because the threshold of 5,000 papers has been applied here as for the main table.

As a result, bodies such as Cancer Research UK and the Salk Institute, which produce a smaller number of highly cited papers, do not appear. We are therefore not publishing the comparative rankings for 2004.

The table suggests that US dominance is replicated across the sector. The only rivals to US institutions are in Europe, led by the UK Medical Research Council, which has about 50 of its own research centres and also funds university research.

Merck is the only company producing enough papers to make the table, despite the pharmaceutical industry's focus on innovation. However, some of Merck's rivals produce more heavily cited work.
