The University of Teesside has appointed Mike Smith , professor and dean of research in the faculty of medicine, dentistry, psychology and health, deputy vice-chancellor (research and enterprise); and Katherine Leni Oglesby , professor, former pro vice-chancellor and dean of the faculty of community studies, law and education at Manchester Metropolitan University, deputy vice-chancellor (academic).

Paul Thorning , industry consultant and former director of Stratalyst, has been appointed director of the University of Bradford's Institute for Pharmaceutical Innovation.

Richard Lamming , Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply chair of purchasing and supply at the School of Management, University of Bath, and founder of the Centre for Research in Strategic Purchasing and Supply, has been appointed director of the School of Management at the University of Southampton.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh has awarded Royal Gold Medals to chancellor of the University of Leicester Michael Atiyah , who is former master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and former president of the Royal Society of London; James Mackay , former lord high chancellor, former dean of the faculty of advocates, lord advocate and a senator of the College of Justice in Scotland and lord of appeal in ordinary; and Paul Nurse , president of Rockefeller University, New York, Nobel laureate for physiology and medicine and former chief executive of Cancer Research UK.

Steve Russell , former chief executive of The Boots Company, has been appointed chair of the University of Nottingham's advisory board.
