Clearly Martin Harris, vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester, does not belong to any end-of-the-world millenarian cults. His personal letterhead already bears the slogan "1851-2001, One Hundred and Fifty Years of Excellence". Assuming it refers to the university, not Sir Martin's advanced age, let us hope there is no sudden lapse in standards in Manchester's anniversary year.
