Barefoot accolades

十一月 9, 2001

(Photograph) - The Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan, is one of nine recipients of this year's $500,000 (£343,000) Aga Khan Architectural Awards.

The college has worked with local teachers, healthcare providers, solar engineers and handpump mechanics to build projects by the Barefoot Architects - local members of the college staff.

The largest project is a college campus fusing local labour and materials, built by an illiterate local farmer and 12 Barefoot Architects, most of whom have no formal education. They were assisted by village women.

The Barefoot philosophy is based on the belief that communities used to develop and maintain a store of local knowledge, which has been devalued in recent times.
