Antithesis's spring jaunt to Japan last week revealed one of the problems of a snappy title for a new project. Masanori Iye, director of the Pounds 160 million Subaru telescope, which the National Astronomical Observatory is building in Hawaii, says that the Japanese public usually assumes that the thing has been paid for by the car company. In fact, the taxpayer is funding it, and the title comes from the old Japanese word for the star cluster in the constellation Taurus known to westerners as the Pleiades.
