Men and women are at the same risk of violence, but only until they start drinking, according to research from Cardiff University. Findings from the university's Violence and Society Research Group has shown that the risk of assault increases much more sharply for men than for women once they start to consume alcohol. The group studied patients arriving for emergency treatment in hospital and members of the public out late at night and at the weekend. Most assaults involved men and women attacking their own sex. The risk of violence decreased with age but increased with disposable income. Home owners were at lower risk than other groups.
