Ray Baker, chief executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council, told a meeting of eminent science policy-makers this week that the success rate for grant applications to the council was likely to increase to 30 per cent this year. The reason seems to be academics' inability to work without a deadline. Since abolishing closing dates for bids, the number of applications has fallen, leaving the 30 per cent success rate well within reach.
