Brussels, 26 June 2002
Commissioners Busquin (research) and Wallström (environment) will both be attending the kick-off meeting of a new network project, METROPOLIS focusing on better monitoring the environment on 5 July.
METROPOLIS brings together 38 partners from 17 countries, including research centres, universities, environmental agencies, metrology institutes, industry and the Joint Research Centre (JRC). The network presents an attempt to establish a European metrology and environment area.
Together the partners will promote and assess environmental monitoring methods. The consortium will then present the results to decision makers as well as the general public, along with an evaluation of the reliability of these methods.
The network is aimed at providing advice for legislators, promoting best practices, educating Europe's citizens and strengthening mutual trust between scientists, legislators and the public.
