The country's first gene jury, run by the Wellcome Trust, experienced a few teething problems after a member of the audience suggested the computer system was not working.
He wanted to know why, every time the audience was allowed to vote to agree with more than one statement, computer displays showed that the percentage of people agreeing with the five statements added up to a total of 100 per cent. When challenged to prove the system was actually working with everyone pressing their computers at the same time, the organisers declined saying: "It might take some time. It might give the computer neurosis."
