ABERDEEN University scientists, the world leaders in deep-sea research, are to investigate fish stocks west of Shetland as part of a Pounds 2.6 million European Union marine research programme.
The team will photograph and track scavenging fish at a depth of 1,500 metres on the sea bed in commercial fishing grounds, which are now also gaining importance for oil exploration.
Later this year, they will carry out similar research in the South Atlantic, to help the Falkland Islands make more informed decisions about issuing fishing licences.
