French opt for English

六月 14, 2002

English is the dominant language in an updated series of journals published by the French Academy of Sciences.

The journals, which used to be called Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences , publish specialised articles by French and international scientists about the latest important discoveries.

Renamed Comptes Rendus , the publications are separated into series, each based on a science - Mathematics , Mechanics , Physics , Chemistry , Biology and Palevol (paleontology and evolution). Each series will publish between eight and 24 issues a year.

To attract more international contributors and readers, the academy is setting up editorial partnerships with foreign scientists and publishing more articles in English.

Editorial director Jean Dercourt admitted the switch was necessary now that "English is one of the most widely used languages" in science.
