The University of Edinburgh is to award honorary doctorates of science to Paul Nurse, director general and head of the cell cycle laboratory, Imperial Cancer Research Fund; James Jardine, former head of the physics department, Moray House College of Education; Terence Coppock, emeritus professor of geography at the university; and Eric Kandel, senior investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Honorary degrees of doctor go to Brian Stewart, group chief executive of Scottish & Newcastle plc and former member of the university court; Robert Smith, chairman of the National Museums of Scotland; and Sir Herman Ouseley, chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality.
Also honoured are Robert Chambers, fellow, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex (DSc SocSci); Michael Fullan, dean of Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto (DEd); James W. Fowler III, director of the Center for Ethics in Public Policy and the Professions, Emory University, Georgia, US (DD); John Widdowson, director of the National Centre for English Cultural Tradition, University of Sheffield (DLitt); Luciano Berio, artistic director, Centro Tempo Reale, Florence (DMus); William Martin, former scientific director of the Moredun Research Institute, Edinburgh (DVMS); and Sally Wood-Lamont, library consultant (MA).
Actress and singer Barbara Dickson will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside in July.
Michael Gibbons, secretary-general of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, received an honorary doctor of laws at a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the University of Ghana.
