The Prince of Asturias, the Crown Prince of Spain, has been made a patron of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. The prince has launched a high-tech research fellowship for Spanish academics.

The University of Oxford has awarded honorary degrees to: Helen Bamber, director of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture (DCL); Dame Judi Dench, actor (DLitt); Sir Howard Hodgkin, artist (DLitt); Viscount Runciman, sociological theorist and fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge (DLitt); Quentin Skinner, regius professor of modern history and pro-vice-chancellor, University of Cambridge (DLitt); Sir Aaron Klug, president of the Royal Society (DSc); Sir Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal (DSc); Janet Rowley, physician and cancer specialist (DSc).

St Mary's College, University of Surrey, has awarded honorary fellowships to Richard Harbord, chief executive of Hammersmith and Fulham Council; Stephen Holt, retired rector of the University of Surrey, Roehampton; Tom Mannion, head of Cardinal Pole RC school, Homerton; Margaret Smart, former chief inspector for higher education; and Andraej Szostek, rector of the Lublin Catholic University, Poland.

The Caledonian Research Foundation has awarded European visiting research fellowships to Christine Barker, charity law research unit, Dundee University, to visit Humboldt University, Berlin; Catherine Emmott, English language department, Glasgow University, to visit the Institute of Linguistics, University of Utrecht; Andrew Roach, history department, Glasgow University, to visit the British School in Rome; Genevieve Warwick, Centre for Theatre, Film and TV Studies, Glasgow University, to visit the American Academy, Rome; Ivan Biliarsky, Institue of History, Sofia, to visit St Andrews University; Nevenka Hrovatin, faculty of economics, Ljubljana University, to visit Glasgow Caledonian Business School; Vojtech Lahoda, Art History Institute, Czech Academy of Sciences, to visit St Andrews; Mikhail Mikeshin, Institute for History of Science and Technology, Russian Academy of Sciences, to visit Edinburgh University.
