Should students be given grades or just marked as pass or fail?

A researcher at Brighton University has tested this question on two groups of students and found that withholding grades appears to lower the incentive to study. The pass/fail group did significantly worse than the graded group as the graded groups were aiming for As and Bs while the pass/fail group were aiming only for passes.
