Preterm labour - the role of inflammation
Some cases of preterm labour, which is a major cause of infant death and disability, are thought to be caused by inflammation. This research focuses on the role of a receptor in the membrane of white blood cells that sets up an inflammatory process. Overactivity of this receptor may lead to premature contractions. By measuring the proteins created by this process, the team hope to learn whether preterm labour results in the production of harmful proteins.
