A degree-level course in gemmology will be offered next year at Lannavaara, northern Sweden, a mining town and gem centre with fewer than 100 inhabitants. It will be northern Europe's first gemmology course. Scandinavia's first diamond find came two years ago, when seven were found near the town. The gems were presented to the Swedish king and queen at the end of the Winter Cities World Conference 2000 in mid-February.
