Laser light that cools atoms

A method of cooling and trapping atoms using laser light has won this year's Nobel prize in physics for Steven Chu of Stanford University, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji of the College de France and Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris and William Phillips of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Maryland. The method has contributed to knowledge about the interplay between radiation and matter, according to the committee.
