Nobel laureates join Toronto protest
Twenty-seven internationally renowned psychiatrists and medical researchers, including Nobel laureates Julius Axelrod and Arvid Carlsson, have accused the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health of violating academic freedom by revoking a job offer to University of Wales psychopharmacologist David Healy. In a letter to Toronto president Robert Birgeneau, the academics call on the university and the centre to apologise to Dr Healy and to restore his job offer.

Association ignores appeal to bar Cuban
The Latin American Studies Association has rejected a demand from Human Rights Watch to bar Cuban academic Darío Machado, head of the association’s Centre of Studies, from its annual conference. HRW alleges Mr Machado was involved in a purge of non-Communist intellectuals.
