$600m pledge to California Institute of Technology
Gordon Moore, co-founder and chairman emeritus of the Intel Corporation, and his wife Betty, have promised donations worth $600 million (£414 million) over ten years to the California Institute of Technology. The Moores pledged $300 million over five years to the university while a nonprofit foundation they established will give $300 million over ten years.
Heaney opens £3m cultural academy
Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney has opened Ulster University’s £3 million academy for Irish cultural heritages, the first of its kind in the world. It is funded under a public-private partnership programme set up by Northern Ireland’s department for employment and learning.
Midlands tremor triggers emergency calls
A minor earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck the East Midlands last night, the British Geological Survey said. The tremor, which caused structural damage to several buildings and prompted a flood of 999 calls in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire, was centred five miles north of Melton Mowbray. Hundreds of people rang police, wrongly believing the tremor to be an explosion.
