UK urged to follow US in recruiting poor
Top universities must do more to recruit poor people, higher education minster Margaret Hodge said today. Hodge said that the leading research universities should follow the the Ivy League institutions in the United States, which actively search for and recruit bright people from poor backgrounds. The minister spoke out as she launched the government’s widening participation roadshow, Aimhigher.
Scottish apprentices pass 10,000 mark
Wendy Alexander, Scotland’s enterprise and lifelong learning minister, today congratulated Victor Black, a 21-year-old stonemason from Glasgow, on becoming Scotland’s 10,000th modern apprentice. A new review shows the number of Scottish modern apprentices in training has more than doubled since 1996, with more than 65 per cent of employers saying they will recruit them again.
Medical imaging scheme wins a million
Aberdeen University’s centre for biomedical functioning imaging has won a grant of 1 million euros (£650,000) from the European Union to investigate how medical imaging can lead to the early detection of disease.
