Trainee teachers struggle with maths
The number of trainee teachers who fail their compulsory maths test is soaring, it was claimed today. The failure rate at Brighton University has leapt from 3 per cent to about 23 per cent, according to the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers. Trainees who fail the exam four times are barred from teaching.

Nottingham professor quits over tobacco funding
The editor of the British Medical Journal has resigned as a professor at Nottingham University over the institution’s acceptance of £3.8 million from British American Tobacco. Richard Smith said the decision to take the money was a “serious mistake”.
