OU boosts student enrolment
Sudents enrolling at the Open University accounted for more than half the growth of undergraduate numbers last year. Undergraduate enrolments were up 2.4 per cent with the Open University accounting for 63 per cent of the part-time undergraduate expansion.

Higher education staff tested for stress
Stress levels of higher education staff are being assessed by Plymouth University researchers for the Higher Education Funding Council for England. Staff in 17 institutions will take part in the study, which will be completed next year.

Welsh consider university unification
Welsh higher education heads are to consider a “one nation, one university” scheme to unify all institutions under the University of Wales banner. The move, which could also involve further education colleges, would bring in five more institutions and would unify the Welsh degree structure.

Nursing college's US head makes debut
The new head of the Royal College of Nursing was today due to address its annual conference for the first time. American Beverly Malone will be the first foreign general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing in its 85-year history. She was an adviser to President Clinton.
