Rendell wins Lib Dem education brief
David Rendell has been appointed further and higher education spokesman for the Liberal Democrats. He takes over from Evan Harris, the party’s new health spokesman. Mr Rendell takes on further education, which Dr Harris did not cover, but he will not cover women’s issues, which stay with Dr Harris.

UN chief addresses Oxford
United Nations general secretary Kofi Annan will deliver the annual Cyril Foster Lecture at Oxford University next Tuesday. He is expected to appeal to the world’s mature democracies to increase their efforts in aiding countries torn by war and political instability. Mr Annan will be awarded an honorary degree by the university at a ceremony next month.

British Library extends higher education links
The British Library plans to develop its relationships with higher education institutions through its next five-year strategy. It hopes to make its collections more widely accessible via the internet and to develop web-based services to help users access the British Library’s collections and other national and international resources.
