As Ukraine's political crisis nears resolution, it appears that discredited members of the old establishment are seeking refuge in academia. Serhij Kivalov - who as head of the Central Electoral Commission certified as correct the result of the November presidential poll, which was later annulled by the supreme court because of massive falsifications and vote rigging - has been rewarded with a new post at a new institute. He is now rector of the Odessa National Law Academy, which seems to have been created expressly for Mr Kivalov by hiving off Odessa University's law faculty. Academics fear that other disgraced officials may be given prime university appointments if they agree to go quietly.
