Officials moot open policy on gene

British and American officials are considering issuing a joint statement in support of the public dissemination of data from the Human Genome Project.

Civil servants at the Office of Science and Technology insist, however, that no move will be made to stop the patenting of individual human genes, either by private sequencing operations such as Craig Venter's Celera or by pharmaceutical companies.
