Meanwhile the success of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and others at upping the percentage of grant applications (they abolished the application dates - having no deadlines cuts down the number who get round to applying) has prompted imitators at the Natural Environment Research Council. The council is thinking of going for "continuous, non-thematic rounds" of awards - which for the illiterate is explained as "ie abolishing closing dates".
