People's poet: Jack Mapanje, one of Africa's most important living poets, ran a writer's workshop this week at Stirling University's summer school, focusing on the theme of the G8 summit and Africa. Dr Mapanje, former head of the English department at Malawi University, was imprisoned without trial by the Malawian Government in 1987. Despite an international campaign by writers and human rights activists, he was held for more than three years and fled his homeland on his release. He is now senior lecturer in creative writing in Newcastle University's School of English
