Lancashire University is doing its bit to combat global warming by closing a financial deal to build eco-residences for students that will include timber from sustainable forests, solar thermal panels and a smart ventilation system with heat recovery. But most impressive of all, it has taken the recycling message to heart and applied it to the funding. Thanks to a clever refinancing scheme, it has got £5 million "cash back", which it is using to improve student facilities.
